How You Can Get Your Hands On Free Startup Perks -- Even if You're Bootstrapping
Use My ChatGPT prompt for generating a "Startup Perks Guide" for your Local Area; (Local is where the action is).
Hey guys and gals, let’s talk about an annoying issue when you’re bootstrapping your startup: it can be hard to get your hands on the same perks, credits, media spotlight, and premium tools that accelerator cohorts and funded startups seem to be able to easily snag.
Well, I’m here to tell you that raising capital is not the only way to get perks. I’ve compiled some resources for you (below) and I’ve developed a ChatGPT prompt to help you generate a report of local resources, the best places to get your fair share of startup perks.
Hacking Startup Perks: Aggregators & Communities
Stop scrolling through endless lists. Take advantage of platforms like Startup Stash and the web resources listed at the bottom of this post; they curate free and discounted SaaS, cloud credits (AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure), design tools, and a lot more.
Don’t be shy. If you can demonstrate any traction at all, or if you can offer specific examples of your successes to date, many major vendors will still roll out the red carpet for you, even if you’re bootstrapped.
Accelerator Perks—Without Joining
You don’t have to join an accelerator like Techstars or Y Combinator to get value: attending public workshops and tapping alumni networks can help you score free perks. Take your shot; accelerators are all about helping the hustle, not just their portfolio.
DM founders from past cohorts. Explain what you’re building and what you’re looking for. You’ll be amazed at how many will forward a cloud credit link or invite you to a closed Q&A.
Media Coverage: Underdogs Get Noticed
The Media is always hungry for the next up-and-comer, especially if you’re doing something unusual or potentially disruptive, building for an interesting niche, or picking yourself up after a setback.
Try to connect directly with journalists and podcasters on X and LinkedIn. Keep sharing raw updates and mini milestones. This stuff gets eyes.
If your journey’s unique, pitch local new sources. I’ve seen side hustlers get front-page press for clever, low-budget wins.
Corporate & University Innovation Programs
Tech giants (like Google, AWS, and IBM) and many universities run open pitch competitions, sandboxes, and mini-grants, with no VC requirement.
These aren’t just perks, they’re portals to mentorship, cloud credits, and cutting-edge beta features. Look for programs focused on your region or vertical; outsiders often get major support because sponsors want fresh faces.
Building in Public & Radical Collaboration
Most founders are overly secretive about their plans, but “building in public” draws opportunity. Post failures, wins, and behind-the-scenes experiments on Substack, X, LinkedIn, or Medium.
Brands, early adopters, and toolmakers hunt for authentic stories and often offer perks or time to people willing to share their grind.
Collaborate with other underdog startups. Pool resources for group discounts, cross-marketing, or even podcast swaps.
Ask for Help Beyond VC Intros
Mentors and investors often have connections outside the VC world, including PR agencies, sales representatives, and cloud partnership managers.
Ask for intros and perks, not just money. You’d be surprised how many doors open. Sometimes all it takes is a personal “Hey, can I get a trial or demo?”
Indie Hacker and Bootstrapper Resource List
The following sources let indie hackers and bootstrapping startups tap into the same resources as VC-funded companies:
Corporate Startup Perk Programs:
IBM for Startups: Open to all qualifying startups globally, get cloud credits, mentoring, and enterprise access.
Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub: Anyone with a startup idea can apply (not just accelerator companies) for free Azure credits, technical support, and more.
Oracle for Startups, Stripe Atlas, Twilio Startups Program, Zendesk for Startups, Salesforce for Startups, DigitalOcean Hatch, Slack for Startups, Freshworks for Startups: Most of these and others listed on 100 Corporate Programs Offering Perks and Resources for Startups run open application processes and offer discounts, credits, and mentorship without requiring accelerator affiliation.
Startup Perk Aggregators and Discount Lists:
Peachscore: Offers open access to a massive library of cloud credits and SaaS discounts for founders. You sign up as a founder directly and get perks, even if not in their accelerator. The same goes for OpenVC perks and platforms like Startupsavant, UpsilonIT, DEV.to, and Reclaim.ai.
Public “Awesome List” Repos & Guides:
GitHub ‘Awesome Startup Resources’ Repo: Community-maintained lists of free and open SaaS, guides, and growth resources.
Cloud Provider Free Tiers:
Google Cloud for Startups: All new accounts receive $300 in credits, and dozens of products remain permanently free, subject to usage conditions.
AWS Free Tier and Microsoft Azure’s free credits are available to all startups, regardless of accelerator participation.
Corporate and University Innovation Challenges:
Many big tech companies, universities, and entrepreneurship centers run open contests, pitch events, and mini-accelerators with no selection barriers. And participation in these programs often unlocks cloud credits, software, and spotlight opportunities.
The Bottom Line
Always look for open, region-specific government or trade association startup grants, as these often include resource packs and perks, not just cash.
Bootstrapping doesn’t have to mean going it alone. It means you’re just going to have to be resourceful, genuine, and ready to hustle harder. The perks and credits are out there; you’ve just got to be on the lookout for them. Stay bold, keep building in public, and remember: The ecosystem backs people who show momentum towards traction and ask for what they need.
