Part 1: Bliss-aligned Startup Ideation
A Modern Ideation Methodology For Today’s AI & Vibe-Coding World
I often see posts on Reddit and Indiehacker.com from people looking to answer “How do I find a problem worth solving or a solution worth creating?
Figuring out what you should work on is the most important decision you’ll make when beginning your startup journey. It’s not a decision that AI alone should make for you, or that web surfing for problems will help, without a meaningful starting point.
Too many indie hackers are using vibe-coding to crank out one App after another, hoping that someday, something will “hit it big!” But the reality is: a serious startup should be something that you care deeply about; something you’re willing to commit, at a minimum, the next 5 years of your life to.
How about not starting with a problem or a solution?
Start by finding your bliss.
Rather than trying to just make money by doing what’s practical or expected and following the traditional “problem-solution” paradigm, why not follow your innermost calling and focus on something that makes your heart sing?
Instead of asking, “What’s a problem worth solving?” or “What hot solution can I create?” why not ask, “What would ignite my passion?”
Why not align your business with your life’s purpose (the things you love doing or having in your life) and acknowledge that lasting startup success is most likely to occur when you’re genuinely invested, emotionally, intellectually, and even spiritually in your chosen area of focus.
This is what I call “Bliss-aligned Startup Ideation.”
Ideation as Self-Realization
Bliss-aligned Startup Ideation places personal fulfillment, intrinsic motivation, and long-term commitment at the core of your entrepreneurial journey. It advocates starting with self-reflection and discovering what activities, industries, or types of products deeply resonate with your own interests, values, and life goals.
What I’m suggesting is that you begin your startup journey by embarking on a journey of self-discovery to find a path that brings you a deep sense of joy, fulfillment, and purpose.
Here is one of the most inspirational short films I’ve ever seen. It’s about discovering your bliss and following it. Making your life’s work your playground. “Drawn From Here.”
Bliss-aligned Startup Ideation
The three steps to performing Bliss-aligned Startup Ideation involve:
Self-discovery (to identify what brings you true joy or “bliss”)
Committing to an industry (based on personal resonance)
Selecting an area within the industry (where your energy and expertise can be applied)
There are problems worth solving and solutions worth creating in every aspect of life and business. So, after you discover a clear, heartfelt direction to follow, is when you should begin to use external tools, like AI. Using AI in the ideation process will be covered in the second post in this “Ideation Series.”
Step 1: Self-discovery
Before you can build anything truly meaningful, you must first slow down, clear the internal noise, and begin to listen deeply to yourself. Bliss-aligned ideation begins not with the outside world’s demands, but with a quiet spark from within.
If you don’t know where to start, begin by dedicating intentional time away from screens, deadlines, and to-do lists to reflect on your life’s high points. Ask yourself: “When have I felt most alive, energized, or deeply satisfied?” Was it building something? Solving a particular kind of puzzle? Helping others learn? Losing yourself in creative flow? Write these moments down, without filtering or judgment.
Next, take stock of your current interests, curiosities, and obsessions. What topics do you find yourself researching late at night when nobody’s watching? What kinds of stories pull you in? Who are the people, industries, or products you can’t seem to get enough of? Sometimes, your bliss is hiding in plain sight, camouflaged as a mere pastime, side project, or idle fascination. Create a “joy audit” by making two lists: one for activities that drain you and one for those that light you up. Do this consistently for several days, and patterns will start to emerge; these are your breadcrumbs toward bliss.
Don’t rush to label your findings as “business ideas” just yet. Allow yourself several days to reflect on these questions. Talk to friends, mentors, or fellow creators, not to ask them what you should do, but to help reflect what they see animating you. Try new experiences that intrigue you, even if they seem unrelated to “work.” Journal about what you notice. The goal is to gather sufficient data about your inner landscape until a few key themes become unmistakably clear.
Finally, embrace the possibility that your bliss might not look like anyone else’s. Startup culture often celebrates certain industries or founders, but your fulfillment may actually stem from “unsexy” niches or deeply personal problems. Trust that honest passion, sourced from self-awareness, is a far greater foundation for a five-year commitment than anything the latest trend or online forum can offer.
When you center your journey on discovering your authentic joy, everything else in the startup process, decisions, pivots, and even setbacks, will align more naturally with who you are and who you will become.
Step 2: Committing to an Industry
Suppose your bliss is helping others feel understood, cared for, and supported during difficult moments. Perhaps you feel a deep satisfaction witnessing comfort or healing, whether through conversation, creative work, or acts of service. Maybe a formative experience sparked this: a time you or a loved one received exceptional care, or conversely, a time you observed the stresses and disconnects in a setting and wished for better.
During self-reflection, you realize that a few things excite you more than the idea of being on the front lines of healthcare, where real human connection, empathy, and support can make a life-changing difference. You’re drawn not to pharmaceutical sales or hospital administration, but to medical clinics, the places where practitioners and patients meet face-to-face, and small improvements can yield huge impacts.
Your bliss for improving human connections leads you to the question: “How could technology help clinics nurture stronger relationships with their patients?” Your passion coalesces into a desire to create some type of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution tailored specifically for medical clinics.
In short, your bliss, creating deeper, more supportive human connections, becomes a tangible expression of the beginning of a startup idea: reshaping the medical clinic experience through empathy-driven technology. The CRM you envision becomes the means for transforming personal joy into impact, making clinics places where people feel truly cared for, one relationship at a time.
Step 3: Selecting an Area Within the Industry
Keep dissecting the CRM category. Use one or more customer review sites like G2, Trustpilot, or Captera along with traditional web search to uncover the various subcategories of CRM software; for example, Salesforce Automation, Marketing, Customer Services and Support, etc., and based on the focus of each subcategory, you choose Customer Service and Support as being most aligned with your bliss.
So at this point, you’ve decided that your heart, soul, and genuine interest are in developing some type of customer service and support software for Medical Clinics.
Conclusion
Always keep in mind that the greatest startups are not just built on spreadsheets or market gaps, but on the deep wellspring of genuine joy.
When you begin your journey with bliss as your compass, you’re not just building a business, you’re crafting a life. Let your inner delight lead, and watch as the seemingly impossible manifests.
Now you’re ready for the more traditional “problem-focused” ideation, but with an AI twist.

A lovely, soul-centered narrative on self-knowledge and recognizing our higher purpose in life.
My best old boss lives in Japan now, and is a back country skier. I posted the video to his page. For me, my "joy audit" includes doing the Q & A sessions, after I show my video on the Gold King Mine Spill. Durango had over sixty people at that screening, and two EPA people were in the audience. Very cool. That's why I submitted my video to three film festivals in Colorado. I enjoy being "that guy" talking about how I made the movie, or my thoughts on the Superfund issue, etc. Telluride Mountainfilm is one of the festivals I submitted to. If I'm in, I hope to see you there in Spring!!
